Contractors: Proper Handling and PPE Are Key to Working With CPVC Solvent Cement

As the pioneer of CPVC fire protection systems, BlazeMaster® CPVC is backed by 60 years of chemical experience and industrial innovation. As such, we take safety seriously and encourage those working with our products to do so at all times.

Concerns about CPVC solvent cement – the material that joins piping with the fitting – come to the fore every so often in terms of the products’ chemical composition in relation to human health.

BlazeMaster Fire Protection Systems prefers to err on the side of caution – particularly when it comes to safety. The company and partner manufacturers participate in and support extensive testing, even when it is not required by law.

Safety First, At All Times

Manufacturers of CPVC solvent cement provide safety information about their product, typically in the form of a safety data sheet. Fitters working with CPVC fire protection products should be familiar with this information; we recommend the contractors who employ them hold regular safety meetings to ensure proper handling practices become routine and that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is used at all times.

CPVC solvent cement has to be stored in a cool, dark location. It must be kept away from children, open flames and any sources of heat, such as burning torches or heaters.

To avoid nausea, dizziness, headaches or breathing issues, the product should always be used with a breathing mask and in a well-ventilated environment.

To avoid itching, burning or flaking of the skin, protective clothing such as an apron should be considered, and gloves should always be worn. Safety goggles are a must to avoid the potential of solvent cement contact with the eye. Should contact occur with the skin or eye, follow safety data sheet instructions and/or seek immediate medical assistance.

On the job site, always ensure that employees are following best safety practices, not only with solvent cement but with all materials. Remember, it is always better to say something when poor safety practices are obvious than remain silent. Keeping employees safe on the jobsite protects them and your business, as well as the well-being of your customer.

Any specific questions about the solvent cement you’ve chosen are best answered by the manufacturer of the specific brand.

We are all in the business of providing fire safety to people across the United Kingdom, and know that safety begins before reaching the jobsite with proper knowledge of the materials being used and the practice of using them. We’re here to help.
