CHICAGO BUILDING CODE AMENDED TO PERMIT USE OF CPVC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS IN NEW CONSTRUCTION
Revision Opens Door for Use of BlazeMaster® CPVC Pipe & Fittings as More Cost-Effective, Life Safety Alternative

CHICAGO -- May 11, 2005 – Chicago’s City Council today approved a significant revision to the City’s building code which allows the use of BlazeMaster® CPVC fire sprinkler systems in new construction. Previously, BlazeMaster CPVC pipe had been permitted in conjunction with retrofits, but today’s move by Council marks the first time that Chicago permits the cost-effective alternative to metallic pipe in new buildings. The country’s 50 other largest cities already permitted CPVC for both retrofits and new construction.

“This is a very positive change for both local building owners and landlords, because it allows them to more cost effectively comply with existing legislation that mandates the installation of fire sprinkler systems in high-rises located within City limits,” said Jeff Gibson, Great Lakes Regional Manager for BlazeMaster Fire Sprinkler Systems.

Over the past 19 months since CPVC for use in new fire sprinkler installation was first debated in Council, BlazeMaster CPVC representatives have worked closely with City officials to demonstrate the superior affordability of CPVC over traditional metallic systems. Much of the savings results from lower installed costs, since BlazeMaster pipe and fittings can be installed in significantly less time than a metal system. This time savings also helps contractors and building owners complete installations within tight construction timelines.

BlazeMaster CPVC fire sprinkler systems also allow contractors more flexibility in the field, because modifications can be made right at the job site. No pre-fabrication is necessary. The pipe is also lightweight, which makes it easier to maneuver on the job site. A highly reliable solvent cement bonding system is used for installation. This method offers the added benefit of faster cleanups because there is no oil or metal debris left behind.

A previous section in the Chicago Building Code had required that only metal pipe could be used in fire sprinkler installations involving new construction. An amendment to Section 15-16-370 of the Municipal Code of the City of Chicago supercedes the old section and allows that CPVC piping systems meeting or exceeding the requirements of NFPA 13-2002 can now be used. BlazeMaster CPVC systems meet and exceed these requirements. Built on CPVC’s 40+-year successful track record, the system provides consumers and building owners confidence. From a safety standpoint, laboratory and field tests confirm that the BlazeMaster CPVC systems feature both low flammability and toxicity.

Gibson concluded, “We are very happy that Council agreed to expand potential fire sprinkler options within the City. Contractors and building owners now have a better chance of keeping their life safety projects on time and on budget.”
